Spare Tires riding bits of South America

A guided bike tour in Chile and Argentina, plus seeing Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands

By Wendy Holmes

#924 – posted Sunday April 5, 2020 by Neil Gunton

I have wanted to go to South America for years, especially after I saw a wonderful wildlife program which documented a year in the life of a puma in Patagonia. Because we want to see other parts of South America, all separated by large distances and we won’t be on bikes all the time, it was simpler to join a guided, fully supported bike tour with Exodus Travels. This will take us through the lake district areas of Chile and Argentina, probably the most touristy bits but presumably by that definition they are well worth seeing. Everything is provided, including the bikes which saves a lot of hassle with the flights.

We leave on January 14, 2020 and begin with 3 days in Santiago to explore that city before flying to Puerto Montt to join the biking group for the next two weeks. When that finishes we fly north to Quito to begin a 6 day road tour south through the Avenue of the Volcanoes from Quito to Guayaquil. This will be with a guide and has been arranged with the help of a travel agent in Quito. Since we aren’t biking this part, I may not do daily entries to the journal but there will be photos and information which might be helpful for cyclists heading along that route. After that we have a week on a small boat cruising through the Galapagos Islands and then a few days to explore around Quito before flying home to Canada.

Dave will celebrate his 70th birthday on this trip so the destinations really should have been chosen by him. However, the travel bug is never far from my wandering feet so I have organized the whole trip and he seems happy with the results! – read this journal
